What is Pilates?

Pilates is a full-body workout designed to build strength and improve posture, mobility, coordination and balance.

It’s also a method - a way of moving & breathing that strengthens the mind-body connection, improving overall physical and mental well-being.

why do pilates?

ADAPTABLE FOR ALL AGES & BODIES

Pilates meets you where you’re at and evolves with you to provide a safe but challenging workout through every stage of life.

JOINT SAFE

Pilates uses low-impact, resistance exercises to build strength without strain, making it a safe & effective workout even for those with arthritis or other joint issues.

PAIN RELIEVING

Pilates not only protects your joints - by improving posture and building balanced, muscular strength around the joints, it helps to restore range of motion and relieve chronic pain.

IMPROVES DAILY LIFE

By focusing on alignment and controlled movements, Pilates builds your awareness of how you move your body. Over time, you’ll find yourself standing taller and moving with greater ease (and fewer aches) - not just while working out but throughout your day.

FUN

To get lasting results, you need a workout that you enjoy and are willing to do regularly. The combination of the Pilates equipment and hundreds of movements means you won’t get bored.

what are the benefits?

STRENGTH

Strong muscles will keep you doing all the things you want to do - yet - it gets harder to maintain that strength with age. Pilates uses a combination of body weight and spring resistance to build strength without strain.

MOBILITY (MORE MOVEMENT, LESS STIFFNESS)

Injury or lack of movement creates stiff, achey joints. Through smooth, coordinated strengthening and stretching movements, Pilates improves joint mobility so you move with more grace and less effort.

STABILITY

Pilates focuses on strengthening the deep core muscles which improves stability and balance, keeping you steady on your feet, reducing the risk of falls and injury.

POSTURE

Good posture not only looks good but it feels good too. Pilates promotes body awareness and alignment that will leave you feeling taller (and a lot less stiff in the neck and shoulders).

STRESS REDUCTION

Breath is the foundation of a mindful Pilates practice, focusing the mind and releasing tension in both the mind and body.

Let's get started

Did you know. . .

Before pilates was a workout, it was a man

Specifically this man, Joseph Pilates, pictured here at ages 57 and 82(!)

A sickly child, Joe studied various types of movement, including yoga, calisthenics and gymnastics - first to heal and strengthen his own body and then those of others - including boxers and WW1 soldiers in Europe and eventually dancers and hundreds of everyday people in his NYC studio.

Physical fitness is the first requisite of happiness
— Joseph Pilates

Believing that a fit, healthy body was necessary in order to fully enjoy life, his system of exercises (originally called "Contrology,") was ahead of it’s time, emphasizing whole body movements that build both strength and mobility while deepening the connection between mind and body.
