The Power of a great teacher

Two women doing Elephant on Balanced Body Reformers at Core Elements in Jupiter FL with Lisa Harvey Pilates instructor

2 years

That’s how long it took for me to finally FEEL it when I hiked my shoulders up towards my ears.

2 years of (extremely patient) yoga & Pilates teachers whispering “Relax your shoulders” and gently tapping on them before I actually felt myself doing it and could correct myself.

The light bulb of awareness went off. . . and then I began realizing how often I did that in the rest of my life.

ALL. OF. THE. TIME.

I lived like that. . . At my desk. . . Driving to work. . . Checking my phone.

I also had headaches. ALL. OF. THE. TIME.

It was a way of life. Another week, another headache.

That’s how it had been since a car accident at age 19. It took 10+ years of pain and 2 years of gentle nudging from patient teachers to realize that - without meaning to - I WAS MAKING THINGS WORSE.

I was so unaware of my own habits and posture that I didn’t realize how much extra strain I was creating.

No wonder my neck hurt. No wonder my shoulders were always stiff. . . They never got a break. I was so used to being in pain that I was numb to how my daily posture was keeping me stuck there.

It took a handful of amazing teachers shining light on my (massive) blind spot. . . MANY times a week for 2 years until it finally sank in.

The headaches are gone.

I no longer carry Advil in my purse.

I no longer NEED weekly massages.

I have a handful of go-to moves that I return to if I feel that old ache in my neck.

That’s the power of a great teacher.

It’s not just the exercises or the accountability.

It’s being taught WHY a particular movement is healing (or harming) for YOUR body. . . and HOW to adapt any activity so that it prevents rather than aggravates pain.

It’s being seen and being shown another way to move and live.

It’s feeling empowered because you have the awareness, knowledge and tools to become your own best healer.

A great teacher empowers YOU to be your own expert

So that:

  • You don't need someone else (including them) to "fix" you.

  • You are confident and capable of healing yourself - and maintaining your gains over time.

  • You’re able to show up as your best self for your family, friends and the things you love because you aren’t limited by or focused on pain.

My life changed because of the power of a great teacher

I want that for you too.

Even if you’ve seen all the experts, tried all the treatments and been left feeling broken and discouraged, I want you to know that change is still possible. Your body is resilient and it’s never too late to build a new relationship with it.

If you’re ready to stop fighting your body and learn a new way, I’d love to help.

Lisa Day Harvey

Known for her knowledge of the body and empowering positivity, Lisa Day Harvey is a Pilates teacher in Jupiter, FL.

Born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, Lisa was initially drawn to Pilates to relieve the pain of multiple neck, back and shoulder injuries (a car accident, sports injuries, and concussions among them), worsened by long work days at a desk. After years of working with one specialist after another and trying seemingly everything else with little success, she was amazed at how quickly she not only found relief from pain but additionally built strength, toned and reshaped her body, improved coordination and posture (growing almost a full inch due to spinal decompression), and regained a sense of ease and delight in her body.

This experience of transformation led her to become a teacher, now specializing in working with injuries and chronic pain.

Based on her own experiences, Lisa believes that pain is simply the body’s way of asking you to do something differently and that injuries can be your greatest teachers if you slow down and pay attention to their signals. Having experienced the possibility of moving without pain first hand, she delights in empowering her clients with the knowledge, tools and felt experience to challenge, strengthen and enjoy their bodies
